Medicardium EDTA Chelation Therapy Part 2

http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/medicardium.html

For more than 30 years, people with fatty buildups of plaque in their arteries (atherosclerosis) may have heard about a “”miracle cure”" called chelation (pronounced “”ke-LA’shun”") therapy. But you may not know that the American Heart Association and other medical and scientific groups have spoken out against this treatment.

This answers the most frequently asked questions about chelation therapy. It also gives the American Heart Association’s position on this procedure, as well as those of other highly regarded scientific organizations.

What’s atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is also called “”hardening of the arteries.”" It occurs when the inner walls of the arteries become lined with deposits of fat, cholesterol and other substances, including calcium. This fatty buildup usually starts early in life and gradually gets worse over many years. That’s why middle-aged and older people are more likely to have the disease.

As plaque builds up, the arteries become hard and constricted. They lose their ability to expand and contract as blood flows through them and they get narrower. These changes make it harder for blood to flow through them, so the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

If this plaque ruptures or a blood clot blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack, stroke or other serious medical problem can result. A heart attack happens when an artery bringing blood to the heart muscle is blocked. A stroke occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked

Brain injury Improved with Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers

http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com

" SPECT imaging showed that no change occurred in the cerebral blood flow of the six control patients during the study period. However, patients who did receive the hyperbaric oxygen therapy showed an increase in penumbral area cerebral blood flow as well as improvements to their speech and memory functions, Dr. Harch said.

The improvements in these patients peaked at 80 hyperbaric oxygen sessions. ""Individualized [hyperbaric oxygen therapy] repeats every 1 to 2 weeks appears to maintain improvement,"" Dr. Harch said.

Dr. Harch told Reuters Health that he has used hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions to treat individual cases of stroke, cerebral palsy and multi-infarct dementia as well as near-drowning and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning patients. ""All these are patients with no other treatment options..."" who were treated 1 year after their injuries, Dr. Harch said.

Dr. Harch noted that patients with the least loss of function following injury show the greatest improvement with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. ""Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a nonspecific treatment that seems to be appropriate in many different forms of brain injury,"" he said.

What Is Hyperbaric Chamber Oxygen Therapy For Autism?

http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/products.html

"Over the years, medical researchers found a number of additional therapeutic uses for the chambers, which force large quantities of oxygen into the body very quickly. For example, hyperbaric therapy (HBOT) can speed the development of blood vessels, thus improving outcomes for certain types of wounds, gangrene, cardiac illnesses, and other conditions. Typically, HBOT is conducted in a hospital setting, in a large non-portable chamber, under high pressure.

In recent years, some doctors theorized that HBOT could improve symptoms of autism by increasing oxygen intake and thus reducing inflammation and hypo-perfusion (lack of oxygen) in the brain. Of course, there is no agreement within the scientific community that inflammation or lack of oxygen cause autism - or are even generally associated with autism.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence for HBOT as a useful treatment for autism, anecdotal evidence and word-of-mouth have made this an increasingly interesting option to parents of children with autism. ""Home"" oxygen chambers and expensive courses of HBOT treatment are being offered by various practitioners with anecdotal evidence of positive outcomes.

Because this treatment has not been scientifically verified, it seems premature to get involved. According to Rossignol, there are risks of side effects when using HPOT, including ear pain, reversible myopia (nearsightedness), and seizures. If parents do decide to consider HBOT before more research is completed, however, it makes sense to do so in the context of a formal autism clinic or children's hospital - both to ensure proper methodology and to reduce the risk of side effects.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy And Retinal Artery And Vein Occlusion

http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment combined with a blood-vessel widening drug (vasodilator) has been shown to improve visual function among individuals experiencing retinal artery occlusion. (European Journal Ophthalmology 3; 89-94, 1993) Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been successfully used to improve vision among patients with retinal swelling (macular edema) and retinal vein occlusion. (Survey of Ophthalmology 39; 347-66, 1995)

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been administered successfully to patients with central retinal swelling (macular edema) resulting from retinal vein occlusion. Among 12 patients who were treated, 10 experienced visual improvement, with median visual acuity improving from 20/100 to 20/25. The hyperbaric oxygen treatment is believed to constrict retinal capillaries and thus decrease leakage of fluid that causes edema. (Ophthalmologica 210; 168-170, 1996)

Dogs exposed to 3 atmospheres of pressure at 100 percent oxygen developed retinal problems and a reduction in their electro-retinograms. Narrowing of the visual field and impairment of central vision has been recorded among humans undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment at 3 atmospheres of pressure for more than 4 hours. (Science 151; 466-68, 1966)
